LA VERBENA DE LA PALOMA La Verbena de la Paloma...remains the brightest jewel of the [zarzuela] repertoire. Its music which is a religious festival dedicated to the Virgin statuette is sweet & popular, with funny and complex characters drawn from the working people whom the composer and librettist had, no doubt, observed in their town of Madrid.

Recalling his wild youth, Cristobal tells this hilarious story about when he and his two teenage brothers raid a chicken farm near the Rio Grande River. They stuff forty chickens into a coop and after heaving the huge coop onto the back of their papa’s old pickup, they make their escape along the rough dirt backroads. The Fence Directed by Michael D. Blum is a new play which takes place on a small dirt road on the United States/Mexico border. When Gin, a hard-working mother and wife, tries to come home to Mexico after a long day’s work in the U. S. , she is faced with an enormous fence that has magically sprung up between the two countries. During her struggle to return home, the play presents us with a wide and often hilarious array of characters, all of whose livelihood depends on crossing this invisible line and all of whom are frustrated by this new development. Within this microcosm of one small area of the border, the play provides satirical insight into a variety of contemporary issues, while illuminating the daily struggles of families whose members must cross the border into either the U.S or Mexico in the course of their lives and work.
